Connecticut is dedicating funding to provide free* lead abatement in pre-1978 homes where children under 6 or pregnant people live or visit regularly. Lead abatement is the process of long term removal of lead paint hazards.
Make Your Home Lead Safe – For Free
This is a great opportunity to make CT lead safe.
Reducing lead is important because babies and young children exposed to lead can have serious health issues, including:
- Damage to the brain and nervous system
- Slowed growth and development
- Learning and behavior problems
Eligibility
Applications are still being accepted, but there are limited funds remaining. Funded projects will be based on an eligibility ranking system. This helps ensure fairness to everyone.
To apply, your home must be:
- Built before 1978
- Privately owned (not government-owned)
Applications are ranked in this order of importance:
- Homes that must remove lead because the health department ordered it
- Homes where a child lives who has too much lead in their blood (5 ug/dL or higher)
- Homes where a child under 6 years old lives
- Homes where a pregnant person lives
- Homes used for family childcare
- Homes owned or rented by licensed foster families who can prove they are allowed to care for children under 6 years old
The contractor will rank your application and decide who gets funding first based on these rules.
